Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is widely used in making infrared windows, fairing and infrared optical elements. It has the characteristics of high purity, insolubility in water, moderate density and easy processing. Zinc sulfide (ZnS) has good uniformity and consistency of refractive index, and has good image transmission performance in the range of 8-12μm, but some of it starts to absorb after 10um m. In the mid-infrared band, the transmittance is relatively high, and the absorption and scattering are enhanced along with the shorter wavelength. Zinc sulfide (ZnS) has strong ability to resist harsh environment, high hardness and fracture strength twice as high as zinc selenide (ZnSe).

Single crystal zinc sulfide (ZnS) is available but not common. In the common spectral range, scattering is very low. While strictly controlling the bulk absorption and internal structural defects of the material, it can be used as a high-power laser device under the condition of adopting polishing technology with minimum damage degree and coating technology with highest optical quality.
Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is oxidized significantly at 300℃, shows plastic deformation at about 500℃, and dissociates at about 700℃.
